Delphi XE5 Hotfix 4 Has New reFind

Embarcadero has released hotfix 4 for Delphi, C++Builder and RAD Studio XE5 Update 2. It contains the updated reFind that was supposed to ship in Update 2.

Embarcadero has released hotfix 4 for Delphi, C++Builder and RAD Studio XE5 Update 2. It contains the updated reFind that was supposed to ship in Update 2.

Form the readme: "This Hotfix provides an updated reFind.exe which can be found in the bin folder. This version of reFind.exe is 2.5. Additional features include unit names replacements, required by the BDE conversion demo script included among XE5 Update 2 demos."

The download (for registered users) is at cc.embarcadero.com/item/29698

So now you can (finally) use this tool along with the scripts that are available in the demo folder to migrate your BDE applications to FireDAC, as I already discussed earlier in my blog at blog.marcocantu.com/blog/refind_and_bde_migration.html. I was testing with an internal version, but as the comments implied, the public version of the tool wasn't working. Hence this hotfix.

So let's get started migrating those old BDE applications before everyone moves off Windows XP in a couple of months (Yes, I know, not really going to happen... but better be ready!)

 Thank you Marco!  I downloaded this and tried it 
right away. I really appreciate the hotfix and the 
speed with wich it was released.  

I'm sorry to report though that it still has a problem 
preventing me from using it to get started.  It is so 
close now... 

It zips through a bunch of small pascal units with a 
small number of BDE components to convert, but when it 
comes to a data module it gets a stack overflow and 
stops dead in its tracks.  

I opened another QC report #121819 for this on January 
17, 2014 with samples and steps to reproduce.  It's 
been just short of a month and I haven't heard 
anything so I don't know if it's being addressed or 
not, but I sure would love to get one more hotfix for 
the stack overflow so it can complete a pass through 
all the code in my ancient bloated BDE application.

I'm resisting doing it all manually without waiting on 
the refind.exe tool because it would take a lot longer 
and I'm trying to be ethical about controlling costs 
for my clients since I bill for time rather than sell 
software.

Hi Marco

I see that if I run refind and my TQuery is set to 
RequestLive=False , when migrated, the FDQuery's 
UpdateOptions.RequestLive = true. I suspect that this 
is because requestlive=false is not stored in the .dfm 
file for the TQuery as Requestlive=false by default.

Is there a workaround for this ?

Hi!

As you probably know reFind v2.5 had a "stack overflow" 
bug when dealing with large units, and in v2.6 this got 
even worse.  Will this be fixed in your next reFind 
release?  Do you have a date?

Magne, that stack overflow bug on larger units is being investigated. No 
release date for now. Might get folded into the next release at this point. 
But we might also make it available as a download...

If you divide FireDAC_Migrate_BDE.txt to 2 parts, and 
rescan directory twice. it works for me.

these lines can be next txt file and not in first file.

#migrate RequestLive -> UpdateOptions.RequestLive
#migrate UpdateMode -> UpdateOptions.UpdateMode
#migrate TransIsolation -> TxOptions.Isolation
#migrate TQuery:DataSource -> MasterSource
#migrate TTable:ReadOnly -> UpdateOptions.ReadOnly
#migrate TDatabase:Execute -> ExecSQL
