Day 5 at CodeRage, CodeGear's online conference. Today there were fewer presentations I felt worth attending, so I've mostly been working... as many things have been lagging during this week of intense online activity. Yesterday, I missed the Vista UAC presentation, which was interesting according to reports. But I had time to stop by at the evening event.
The chat was funny as usual, but what I liked was the open-mike SkypeCast, in which tens of people could chat, possibly all talking at the same time. There was also a lot of "typing" sound, as some of the attendees probably used built in mikes. I added some fun to the experience when "Pamela" (a Skype call recording plugin) bumped in. Oddly enough, at a given point the host (John Kaster) lost his battery power... and the SkypeCast stayed up with no moderator, we kept talking a little (with another REST vs. SOAP debate). One of these days I'll host a SkypeCast, at least for Italian Delphi developers, but might also set up one, once in a while, for anyone willing to have a chat.
Meanwhile two relevant things are happening, as you can read in some of the CodeGear blogs. Allen tells us Borland has announced the revenues of CodeGear, which are apparently much better than many were expecting (although lower than last year, but no mayor version of Delphi was released in 2006 and the long sale/disinvestiture saga added a lot of uncertainty to the market). You can read a more detailed report here.
While I'm writing, I'm hearing Micheal Swindell repeating his introductory keynote, this time live, and we could follow it much better this time. Here are a few more items worth noticing:
- On Delphi, CodeGear is committed to smaller and more frequent releases, a good reason to subscribe to the software maintenance.
- What is Delphi? A family of product. What does it take to be Delphi? Object oriented, reusable frameworks, 2-way visual development, event driven, seamless data connectivity.
- Introducing Turbo JBuilder, a ready-to-use Eclipse distribution.
Might write another post after the CEOs speak, if it is worth. Otherwise, nice conference... back to work.
