Yesterday, Embarcadero made available a new edition of Delphi, called Community Edition, and free for many non-professional usage scenarios.
The release of Delphi Community Edition is fantastic news for the Delphi language, the developer community, the partners, and the entire ecosystem. We hope it will help new developers (students, hobbyist, open source developers, and someone starting with mobile store publishing, among others) adopt Delphi for their Windows, Mac and mobile development.
This new version is a big leap forward from the Starter edition, as it offers the full FireMonkey and FireUI multi-device development experience, plus a fully working IDE, basic database access, including even IBLite for mobile.
Needless to say I've been involved in the process of making this happen, among many others in the company, and I'm very happy this is now a reality. If you are not a professional developer, enjoy it. If you are a professional developers, spread the work about Delphi Community Editions to other developers, students, schools, teachers, hobbyist, and anyone else who could be interested and help us grow the Delphi developers community.
Long live to Delphi!
PS. In the meantime we are also released a new build of Delphi 10.2.3, but if you already have 10.2.3 and have downloaded the various patches you won't need to update. Trying to minimize the uninstall/install annoyance when possible.

What use case do you have in mind for a
revenue max of $5000 for a company with 5
developers? A start-up? And as soon as they
make their first 5K+ they can hand it all over to
Embarcadero to buy 5 licenses?

Great news!
Maybe the $5.000 revenue limit should be increased to
$50.000 or cut off to really spread the power of
Delphi all over the community of developers. Otherwise
it could be hardly used for any kind of commercial
project made by a startup or a single developer when
there are so many low-cost-but-first-class alternatives.

Great news for us delphi lovers ^^
Do you have corrected the online install? Because the pro version
online setup doesn't install the webbroker.

when installing the community version of Delphi does not allow
me to install because it shows the error that you mention and I
follow the steps to see the log
It shows some kind of error when trying to install DirectX.
There will be a way to skip this step in the installer so that the
installation process continues, since when the error is displayed,
the installation will no longer continue

Great new, this is going to increase delphi programers.
In the other hand, I have a problem, maybe someone can
help me. I have a proffesional edition license and it
includes one year subscription. I want to buy the
subscription maintenence before my free year end. for
another year where can I do that. I cant find the

My kid's school definitely makes more than $5K a
year. Would they be able to install the Community
Edition on all PCs in the classroom for free? Surely
they will not be selling software created in the
classroom. 2x options exist in South Africa (Delphi or
Java) and schools will go for the cheapest.
As a Delphi developer I get a rash just being near a
Java developer, how will I survive with my kids
learning Java?

Regarding schools this is not a loophole in the licensing model, but it
is consistent. Schools can ask to use Delphi Academic editions for
free, this is a free but fully licensed version, with a specific focus on
use for training. Schools cannot use Delphi Academic or Community
to write software for running the school business.
Delphi Academic is free and the right solution for schools. Give us a
change to keep in touch and track their progress and offer help. The
school student can take one of the Academic licenses home, but now
even better license their own CE version.

I am confused about the verbage $5000 in revenue.
This can be interpreted in multiple ways.
1). I sell my apps built with the Community Edition
and earn more than $5K then I must buy
OR...
2). I am retired, do not sell apps just playing and
relearning but my income/revenue from retirement is
more than $5K. Must I still buy?
Anybody know?

That is great to have a Delphi Community Edition.
It is by far the best programming environment that can be obtained
free of charge for learning programming or for hobbyist. We get
already quite a lot with the starter edition but now it is awesome to
able also to develop for the mobile platforms!
Is Web broker available in the community edition at least on
windows? Is it possible to use Delphi MVCframework (from Daniel
Teti). I ask this because it was not the case with the Starter edition.

A few notes. For the DirectX issue see the link below (which was
also suggested in other comment). To be more precise, depending on
the OS version and configuration, you might succeed running the
IDE "as admin" or "as normal user" to complete the installation. It
seems it generally works in one of the two ways...
For the revenue limit, this is tied to the direct use of Delphi CE or
software development and related consulting revenues, or revenues
obtained based on the use of the software. Anyone with a regular
employee job (where Delphi is not used) or a non-work income
(retirement pension, unemployment funds, financial revenue, parent
inheritance) should be covered. Ultimately, read the EULA, this is
just my personal and non-binding interpretation.
CE includes WebBroker

Idera made here THE one most important step towards
popularisation delphi/c++ builder.
I have pro with firedac license anyway for long
time now but Rad Studio being popular means more
developers and more jobs for me, also safety that
solution i invested many years of education in , won't
vanish into oblivion. There was simply no other
option to compete with Visual Studio and other tools
than making RS popular and available for start-ups and
enthusiasts! Great news!

Very (very, very very) good news !
I just see some littles problems with the licence :
* The "5000 $ revenues" should be change in "5000 $ revenues
obtained with the software". So all the entreprises/start-up will give
Delphi a real chance with a real project.
* The one year validity : in soft dev. when we choose a tool we need
stabilityand vision not duration limitation.
I think these are details and will be changed for the next versions.
But, again, this is most excellent news since years and years of
Delphi, even for those, like me, who have a paid version !

Just a little bit more ...
Ok I remember posting to this blog some time ago when Delphi was celebrating its 22nd birthday and then I asked for dbGo in free version of Delphi and finally there it is. This Community Edition is definitely a
step in the right direction in terms of putting Delphi and C++ Builder to the position (place) they deserve.
But this is still not enough. More is neeed. What else is there to do ?
1.) License per-year revenue limit should be the same or higher from that od MS VS CE which is 1 Million $ if I'm not mistaken
2.) Delphi and C++ Builder CE should include full version of FireDAC and DataSnap (both traditional and REST based).
That would be it. I'm sorry for being sincere but this is how I see things.
Dear mr Cantu a while ago I wanted to add my own comment on Jim Mckeeth's YT video : "Why I love Delphi", but for some
reason I didn't. Now it's time to express my opinion. I don't really care that much about Object Pascal or C++ as much as I care about or love
Embarcadero's frameworks, options and libraries : VCL, RTL, FMX, TDataSet* paradigm, DataSnap and Embarcadero's software development approach in general. I very
much respect and have nothing against p. languages C# and Java but I don't like .NET framework (WinForms, WPF, ADO.NET, ASP.NET you name it), or
Eclipse or Android Studio or whatever else is there. This means I would gladly develop my apps in any p. language as long as I use Embarcadero frameworks,
libraries and components. That's the whole point.
So this brings me to my final thought and suggestion to you : I don't know if that's legally or technically possible, but if you really want to wipe out the mediocre
Microsoft or current Java based software development products you need to make i.e create these : Embarcadero C# Builder and or Embarcadero Java
Builder. I'm not talking about bringing Delphi.NET or JBuilder back to life. I'm talking about creating new products exactly like C++ Builder but with support for these
so called "superior" "modern" programming languages, that is a combination of VCL, RTL, FMX, etc. and C# and Java. If this could be done then I assure you that Embarcadero would eliminate all
of its competition and would finally take the place it deserves, because options ,possibilities and technologies for app development you're offering in your frameworks and libraries are in my opinion best, most
efficient and most mature.
Think about it.
Thank you for your attention and I apologize for this long post and my bad English ;) (I'm from Bosnia and Herzegowina).
Have a very nice day.

year. On the About page I see:

Paolo, this is correct. The free license is for one year. You'll be able
to get another 1 year license (for the versions that would be current
at that point) provided you still comply with the license limitations
in the terms of revenues and team size.

Hi Marco
Indeed a game changer IDERA!
As people are now going to use Delphi, I just need
clarity on two things:
1. Will there always be a community edition? I don't
want to develop for a year and then get a big surprise
that I must now purchase Delphi to continue usage.
2. Linux support is a must, as hosting on Windows is
more expensive for back end services. Will this be a
consideration?

Hi Marco,
This is great news. I have been a Delphi developer
since Delphi 3. One of the most challenging aspects
of Delphi for developers, has been the affordability
of a license, to use for learning or doing small side
projects.
One question can the Firedac add on pack be
purchased and installed in the community version?
Thanks very much.

Hi Marco,
I have used Delphi for many years teaching 16/17 year old students in
programming classes. I was wondering if the new Community
Edition will run on a Mac as I have a mix of student devices, both
Windows and Mac laptops.
Also, is it better to use the Community Edition or the Academic
version ... we do not have a large budget for software.
Thanks for your advice

Dear mr. Cantu this Community Edition (CE) is perfect. It's so good
we can now develop apps for mobile platforms for free. The only
thing missing in CE is DataSnap so that we can make mobile
bussiness apps for enterprise databases.
Please allow us to use non-REST DataSnap in CE and also don't kill

Excellent! I am late discovering this, and I could not be happier. I
posted to the forums many times about this needing to happen. I had
abandoned Delphi as a hobbyist a few years past, after a long
association (from the Turbo Pascal days). I simply could not afford
it. But this move could help create a new generation of young
programmers to keep alive a language and IDE I simply fell in love
with a long time ago. Well done!

It would have been a good surprise if there was not the 5K USD limit for using the community edition. Honestly I don't know a single freelance earning less than that. I understand better why my acquaintance have been moving to DotNet one after the other. I start developing with Delphi in 95 and I follow you for decades but I can't see in this news (this old news) a good news. Since Embarcadero has moved from the upgrade licensing scheme to the anual fee, I'm not happy with Delphi cost and now it is increasing to much every year. 30% this year. I need to find a new scheme to continue using delphi (and community is not an option)
