A new release of RAD Studio, Delphi, and C++Builder, called "10 Seattle" is available since Monday, and you are probably already aware of the news. If not head to:
www.embarcadero.com/products/rad-studio
to learn about the new great features, from the 2x IDE memory to the incredible Windows 10 support, from the new Android services to the MongoDB FireDAC integration... and much much more, as you can see even in more technical details at docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/Seattle/en/What%27s_New.
A Few More Links
I think it is still worth pointing out to a few additional links and resources:
Eweek article introducing the product: www.eweek.com/developer/embarcadero-rad-studio-10-seattle-targets-windows-10.html
The Register article focused on C++Builder's new Win32 compiler: www.theregister.co.uk/2015/09/01/borland_c_now_legacy_as_embarcadero_releases_delphi_and_c_builder_10/
The team fixed 331 user reported bugs in 10 Seattle (274 from Quality Portal, 57 form the old Quality Central). See the list at edn.embarcadero.com/article/44561. It is likely the number is much higher, as many of the out-of-memory related issues are still open, pending feedback from the original submitters. We'll look forward to re-test and close a few more.
Launch Webinar
Launch webinar taking place later today (and tomorrow, for Australia and Asia/Pacific time zones). Looks like we'll have a great crowd, but there is still room to register at
forms.embarcadero.com/RADFirstLookWebinar-2015-09-02
. I'll be there presenting RAD Studio 10 Seattle with the other two product managers, Sarina and Luis. The idea is to introduce all of the main new features, as a technical and detailed coverage could take many hours. There will be plenty of demos, though.
If all goes smoothly, the webinar in itself will be just slightly over one hour, with live Q&A following it.

Delphi 10 Seattle released along with RAD Studio and CBuilder
Greetings Marco,
Is this the 'second' Release that we were told about
earlier this year, or are we to expect another? XE9?

Also curious about what Keith asked also. I feel like
sometimes I'm just paying for launch parties and
re-branding the same old product with a tiny new
feature here and there. I'd love a 2015
implementation of RAD Studio - a total re-write.
I love the way mobile development is handled in RAD
Studio - hate the Visual Studio 2015/Xamarin
integration. Too much of a pain in the you know what.
I'd love to be able to code in a .NET language like C#
with RAD Studio's drag and drop designing. Sounds
weird, but I'm at least twice as productive doing it
that way that writing tons of code the Visual Studio way.

Will there be an ISO download option? I suspect
network issues behind our firewall preventing
installation.

What is the naming convention? It seems odd to have
two geographic names: Delphi and Seattle. Does
"Seattle" signify that XE10 is largely about Windows
10? Will "Cupertino" be next, for Apple; or will it
be Palo Alto, for Android?

I think embarcadero actually deserves some credits for the direction
they took with this version. Finally they are working on improving IDE
stability which has been a big problem with recent versions. Working
with xe8means I have been missing a lot the stability provided by the
much more stable 2007 version. They also finally have now a c++11
32 bit compiler. Again a big thumbs up. I have not started to use
RX10 yet but hope they finally with this build solve all the typical IDE
crashes.
Please keep working in the direction you have taken with this release.
In any case I wod say I also prefer 1 or 2 year release cycle with
updates in between. Having to install a new suite with all third party
components every half year is too time consuming (even though
GetIt helps a lot for the most common packages).

Keith and Zachary,
we are currently on a 2 releases per year cycle, and pushing update
subscription to move people to a single yearly payment, covering all
we release.
In terms of features, we have a larger team and can get out a lot of
new value every 6 months. Waiting a full year for updates on the
mobile world would be a problem. And again, if you are on
subscription, you can decide when to migrate and which project to
migrate to newer versions, based on your needs.
We tried C# tooling in the past, wasn't that successful so it was
later dropped.

Michael, regarding the naming convention, yes, there are two
cities.. but only because Delphi happens to be a city. That is the
product name (and so it RAD Studio or C++Builder).
We now have a number 10 after the product name, referring to the
release version. And Seattle is just a moniker for the release, Apple
OS X style.

All of the continued refinements to the legacy IDE
are great; however, error insight is still just as
wonky as ever... I have a project open right now in
DX Seattle and the code editor says it can't resolve
any unit in the vcl namespace. **sigh**

Greetings Marco,
So ... this is the second release for this year.
Fair enough.
I am just about to blast into all the mobile/n-tier
stuff full time and wanted to know if any other app
server stuff was coming out this fall.
By the way ... I am really impressed by how much
great product Emb has been turning out these past few
years. Its just amazing.
Now ... Ready, Set, Heads Down ... CODE!!!
(I'll take a few hours off to participate in Code
Rage)
Lastly, by the way, I have had a subscription for
the last 5 years and I am thoroughly pleased with
it. I would recommend it to any developer.

Update subscription
I've had a quick look at the trial and it seems good.
Help system is a lot better, update from XE3 was
reasonably painless (needed to create new project
files, which is typical). The Windows 10 features I
could not care for, but it seems like a solid update
nevertheless.
The problem I have is the lack of bug fixes without
the update subscription. This adds on to the $532
purchase price a yearly cost of $324 (per developer).
Given I typically upgrade about every 4 years, this
increases the cost from $532 to $1828.
And given my experience with XE3, where a show stopper
W64 bug was not fixed until XE4, I'm skeptical if
major bugs will will go unfixed for those not
subscribing to the update subscription.

Just like windows copied apple (OS X) naming
convention and declared 10 is going to be the last
version of windows so does embarcadero go that way.
RAD is going to stick with the 10 version and later
just apply the makeup. So the 10 version is going to
be the last one. If needed theyre just going to
replace the town name like RAD Studio Vegas or RAD
Studio Chicago but the version will always be 10.

Do you know?:
When I upgrade to DX10 without subscription now, what
earlier verion of XE8 will I get? The one with the
general update 1 or the one with the subscription
update 1?

Derek,
update subscription adds a lot of value, beside getting regular new
releases: fixes for older versions, exclusive webinars, beta access,
and 3 calls to our tech support every year. I think this is a
tremendous value for 532$/year
Peter,
if you buy 10 Seattle without subscription, you won't get any
"subscription update", even for older versions. And you won't get
updates for 10 Seattle. Udpate subscription is fully recommended, it
is "mandatory" for a good experience with our product.

Delphi 10 Seattle
Hi marco - any idea who we could poke to ensure the
VCL designer gets multi level undo support?
Currently it's only allowing the undo of
deleting/creating new objects,. but moving, sizing etc
- no dice.
I'd hoped RX10 would come with this much anticipated
feature for the designer, but alas. Still waiting.

I quite agree with the other thomas. :)
1-2 years for major releases would be much preferred,
but i guess firefox and IE have set the new standard
in this.
unfortunately embarcadero seems to want delphi to stay
version 10 for a while, and only add a confusing city
name.
Instead of using :
- Amsterdam
- Berlin
- Cairo
- Dallas
To at least have some semblance of increasing version
number, we went straight to S.
This is a major flaw in the OSX "numbering" system,
and quite confusing to most users.
Let's hope they'll at least give the next update a
version 10.1 and then 10.2
ATI had it on the right track once they picked up the
versioning relative to the year and month of the
released version.
15.9.123 = 2015, 9th month, build 123

Undo in Form Designer
The issue with undo in form designer is relatively simple to explain:
there is basically no way it can really be done in a complete way.
And a half based solution (you can undo only some properties)
would be very confusing.
Why it cannot be done, you'd ask. Because properties have side
effects. A lot of them have. You turn active on an HTTP component,
it makes an actual call, fills an attached response object with data,
compiled header information... how to you undo it? Same with
database tables, just to mention another obvious example.
Most other IDEs with designers have no side effects, no live data,
only "configuration" properties. That would be a much easier
scenario.

It's understandable that side effects of every single
property couldn't be handled - but even just X/Y would
be a welcome step in the right direction.
Deleting/adding affects the tab order.
Moving affects the X/Y.
Just configuration properties as you say.

Hi marco,
Is there a changelog available for "new cool stuff"
that people can read who are focused on the VCL for now?
For example, D7 requires some component for reading
zip files.
But, Delphi 2010 has a TZip readily available.
Then there's threads, String changes, and more.
I was wondering if there was an official list?
