Installing Window 7 (From Scratch)
Over the last 3 weeks I made too many tentative to upgrade my Windows Vista installation to Windows 7. I reported some of the issues in an older post. On Sunday, I backed up my entire laptop over an external USB driver, and went for another round of installation. This time there wa no boot problem, but after the installation was done Windows 7 couldn't boot because of issue with the registry files.
Having a backup, I went bold and tried a brand new install, which worked smoothlessly, recognizing all of my hardware after the first basic installation. It went to grab some drivers from the HP site, as well. I have to say the process was very smooth and much faster. But now (over one day after my Monday morning installation) I'm still struggling finishing reinstalling all of my software. Good luck some of my key properties (including email) are online and kept working.
So, what did I install over Windows? Here is a complete list of what I put on my computer, in the oder I installed it:
- 7zip
- Vmware Player
- Google Chrome
- KeePass (version 1.16, not the .Net one)
- Delphi 7, along with its updates
- Skype
- OpenOffice
- IrfanView
- WinSCP
- PuTTY
- TortoiseSVN
- Delphi 2007 (the December 2007 edition)
- ClamWin Antivirus
- Firebird 2
- Context
- Delphi 2009 plus its automatic updates (nice to have them)
- FileZilla
- Apache 2.2
- Flash
- Flame Robin
- GOM Media Player
- Firefox
- Thunderbird
- MS Build Community Tasks
- XanaNews
- RAD Studio 2010 (Delphi, C++Builder, and Delphi Prism)
- Mozy Backup
- ER/Studio Developer Edition
- Interbase 2009
- InstallAware Express
- Adobe Acrobat 8
- Acrobat Reader 9
- Beyond Compare
- XmlTypist
- Microsoft Office 2007
- Ashampoo Burning Studio
I still have a few in the pipeline, including Windows 7 Sdk, Silverlight, the free versions of Visual C#, the SysInternals Suite, a number of Delphi components (already on my disk, but not installed), Paragon Hard Disk Manager, Picasa, and possibly TopStyle (of which I plan buying a license).
What did I forget? What else would I need? Suggestions are always welcome.

I also use about 2/3 of those on your list. KeePass, IrfanView, SysInternals are indespensible! Also recommend: PSPad (written in Delphi) pspad.com PureText Plain-text Paste utility Winmerge (unless you paid for BeyondCompare) I'm trying out VirtualBox to see if there are advantages over VMWare... OK, now I may have to give TopStyle a second look.Comment by Jamie on September 15, 22:09

My favorites missing from previous lists: "media player classic" (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/) - i think name says it all. "clipx" (http://www.bluemars.org/clipx/) - let's you keep more than 1 item on clipboard, it has saved me from a lot of trouble several times! Also some firefox extensions (like flashblock, colorzilla etc) are essentialComment by mart on September 16, 10:56

You can remove WinSCP as Filezilla is already a SFTP client.Comment by Yann Papouin on September 24, 12:59

You could also remove WinSCP AND AShampoo Burning Studio from the list after installing Total Commander with the SFTP and burner plugins. You can simply take the TCUP edition (http://tcup.pl) and only install the plugins you need. There are lots of other great plugins, of course, e.g. NTFS link creation etc. Everything can be controlled through the keyboard, and totalcmd was written in Delphi, so it must be good stuff ;).Comment by nevel on October 19, 17:04
