Handbook Note 10/113: Borland Registry Entries

Note 10 of 113 of Delphi 2007 Handbook

Note 10: Yes, oddly enough the registry still refers to “Borland” and “BDS”. Probably fixing all of these references would have caused problems to third-party plugin tools for the Delphi IDE.

This is a comment to the fact that while folder names changed (from "Borland" to "CodeGear" and from "BDS" to "RADStudio") the corresponding registry settings did not. This blog post is part of my "113 Delphi 2007 Handbook Notes" blogging project, to promote my new Delphi book.

PS. I'm leaving for the US tomorrow morning, I'll be slow posting on the blog and replying to email over the entire week.

call it a breaking change - the third party market
will adapt quick enough, they always do.

You are right about "Probably fixing all of these
references would have caused problems to third-party
plugin tools for the Delphi IDE", Marco.

If CodeGear changes this part completely, that means a
lot of plug in writers (including me) have to make
changes. Because normal users do not pay attention to
the registry, I guess a change is not that necessary.

The folder name changes is not bad. I can still find
the bin folder easily by reading a registry value.
That's fine because I do not need to modify one line
in my project.

They could have used REG_LINK to create symbolic
registry links from the old to the new names.
