Delphi for PHP Versus Kylix

As you are probably already aware of, Delphi for PHP is now shipping. And CodeGear has a new logo. But my comments drift towards Kylix.

In the last week I've been quite busy and not always connected, so I've not been able to blog regularly about all of the news... here is a very short summary, followed by my comments:

At the Brisbane event, a Linux developer asked whether the Delphi for PHP project will end like the Kylix one. Malcolm Groves mentioned PHP is way more used on Linux than a Pascal-language based tool, so it is probably going to be better received by a large community. He also pointed out that the price strategy is slightly different. Kylix was introduced as an expensive tool (actually talking with Allen Bauer I found out the team wanted a much lower price tag, but someone in upper management screwed this up). I also added the fact that VCL for PHP is open source. FreeCLX was never really maintained and open. So, there are 3 relevant reasons why Delphi for PHP can be a success, and at least 2 relevant reasons (there is little you can do for the language) Kylix was mismanaged.

OK, so here is the logo (from Steve Trefethen's site, as I could not find it elsewhere... sorry for the extra traffic!). I'm not sure I like it better than the temporary one, but I might need to get used to it.

Delphi for PHP Versus Kylix

Ops, after checking I realized that the VCL for PHP
project on SourceForge is in fact still empty. Hope
they'll actually add the code it it, as this looks
like a false start...

Also, I failed to mention the funny 1-day trial
they've set up for Delphi for PHP. Ops!

That 1 day trial was not a "oops": they probably will
change it now that Q1 is over. If they had set it to
30 days, some customers would not have bought it
before the end of Q1, so that would mean a few less
bucks in their pockets... Also, giving them too much
time to play with it would mean they would more easily
found out about the bugs still lingering in the
released version. That's also why Delphi 2007 and
Delphi for PHP were rushed out the door with *known*
bugs (IDE crashes in several flavours for D2007,
missing files in deploying DPHP apps and other rough
edges). Unfortunately, the need to make money "speaks"
higher than the need to produce quality tools...
That's not a first: MSFT once did sell Beta versions
of Windows 98, but at least they called the "beast" by
the proper name and didn't call it a finished product...

Marco,

according to the qadram developers on the borland
public newsgroups for D4PHP, the sourceforge site will
be populated Monday.

I like that "old" logo better ;-)

Have some fun in Australia.

All the best!

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear - all this obsession with
corporate image and logos. I hope this does not mean
that there may be some phbs (Dilbert fans will get
this...)in the higher echelons of CodeGear!

We, as developers are far more interested in the
performance of the products than the corporate spin.

Just had a look and indeed the trial is now 14 days
which is good to see =) However, I think I will wait
until version 2 as bugs will get ironed out (can see
2 bugs on sourceforge as I post this) and the
component base will be larger.
