Busy Writing Tiburon Book
I'm not very active on the blog because I'm busy writing my coming Tiburon book. The book is not going to be an update of my Delphi 2007 Handbook but a brand new volume specifically focused on new Tiburon features. The reason is simple: Tiburon has so much new stuff in it that I should have no problems writing 300 pages specifically focused to those new features. Right now I have almost 200 pages done!
It might be that later on I published a combined Delphi 2007 + Tiburon Handbook, possibly updating the material of the previous book, to highlight any difference and integrate the two. Right now the book is going to have four parts:
- Part 1: Unicode (introduction, UnicodeString, porting)
- Part 2: Delphi 2009 and its Compiler (IDE, Compiler, RTL)
- Part 3: Win32 development (VCL, Vista, Ribbon, COM, Translation)
- Part 4: Database and Remoting (Dataset and dbExpress, possibly BlackFish, new DataSnap, possibly Indy and some Internet-related topics)
The plan is still to show you the compiled demos in action (along with some limited source code) on YouTube, but this is taking more time than I was expecting... as book writing and some other consulting is taking precedence.

Hi Marco, Great! I enjoyed the D2007 book, as it gave working info on many of the new features that CodeGear didn't document or provide demos for. Will you be covering generics and anonymous methods? If so, count me in as a buyer. :-)Comment by Ken White on July 31, 19:44

Hey Marco, this is great news. Your Mastering D6 was my first Delphi book. In the meantime, I've moved to greener pastures (C++, C#), but still keeping an eye on Delphi since it still is my favorite dev-environment. The new language features look great and I hope this release will be a smashing success for everybody involved in the Delphi community...Comment by arni on July 31, 20:35

Great to hear new Delphi books are coming... Have you thought eventually about releasing a complete Delphi 2009 Book anywhere after Tiburon one, or you are done for some time with big pieces? RegardsComment by Zlatibor Boro Urosevic on July 31, 21:19

No offense, but how can you possibly "write a book" covering Unicode porting (or a number of the other topics listed) when - unless you have more hours in your day than the rest of us - your only experience (to date) is presumably... um, writing a book on it? How much more helpful is this book really going to be than, say, the Tiburon help files themselves? Ah, no wait... I think I understand now. :)Comment by Jolyon Smith [http://www.deltics.co.nz] on August 1, 00:09

Marco, major thanks (again) for your contribution to the Delphi community, and sharing your invaluable knowledge! Like all of your previous books, sign me up for a copy when it comes out.Comment by Myles [http://www.techsolusa.com] on August 1, 18:22

Glad to hear about the new book; keep 'em coming! Especially if it's eating into your time, I question the value of those YouTube videos. Some of us only have occasional access to broadband, and spent more time in places where we have dial-up only, or no Internet access at all. So, if you're going to do the videos at all, why not do them in Camtasia or some other format that will allow us to download the video once, then watch it as many times as we want, wherever we happen to be?Comment by Rick Carter [] on August 3, 07:04

Looking forward to reviewing your book. I agree making movies is very time consuming, it probably takes about 3 hours to make a 10 minute video (by the time you get it uploaded and stuff).Comment by Alister Christie [http://codegearguru.com] on August 4, 00:32

Jolyon, I think (though I don't know) that Marco is in the beta program and has already seen and used Tiburon. That's a guess, but fits some of the other preview-ish posts I remember reading recently, and would answer your question. Cheers, DavidComment by David M on August 6, 07:44
