Nick Bradbury of HomeSite, TopStyle and FeedDemon fame, discusses why he prefers using Delphi in a very interesting blog post. In his "Why I Use Delphi", he underlines four points I almost completely agree with:
- Speed
- No runtime
- Startup time
- No dependencies on Microsoft's Agenda
Well worth reading. For an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) targeting the Windows platform with local, Internet-based, or client/server applications you can hardly find any better alternative to Delphi.
PS. Taking two weeks off in central/southern Italy (eastern side), we'll be veru little online. We'll tweet from time to time.

I think, things are a bit different that he says they are. And because he is refering to .net Speed is excellent in C# too and startup time is *greatly* improved after .net 3.5 sp1. Delphi's main weakness is that is very costly (Delphi Enterprise costs 2000 dollars. With 1300 only, someone can get msdn professional subscription and get a whole lot of things, with far less money) And let's not forget that someone, can get C# Express totally free... I now that M$ has the power to do this but something must clearly change for Delphi to be compelling again. And finally, the jobs...Can not get one easily by using Delphi.Comment by anthonyb on July 11, 13:02

I think the single, most compelling reason to use Delphi is that you have full control of what you are doing when. Nick's reasons are all excelent and totally agreeable with anyway. As to M$ owning the market, that's very true and it's not gonna change anytime soon. Problem is that Embarcadero makes money out of dev tools - there's a freebie however: www.turboexplorer.com - go check it out! IMHO what Embarcadero is really missing is some campaign like GetFirefox, if you get the idea. Plus, good manuals are lacking - Nick Hodges had done a TurboPad tutorial series, we need more of that! What I would see as a *huge* plus would be some kind of Webservice tutorial: iirc, Turbo Explorer comes with a SOAP implementation. Cheers, AndrewComment by Andrea Raimondi on July 31, 19:27
