Advantage Database Server 10 Released

Sybase has released a new version of its powerful DB server, used by many Delphi developers (myself included).

Sybase (soon to be acquired by SAP) has released a new version of its powerful DB server, used by many Delphi developers (myself included). Advantage Database Server has a very good reputation in the Delphi community, sports native TDataset component descendants (free and with source included) that help migrate BDE applications, has both a super-fast ISAM access and a full SQL engine, has a free local version and a rather cheap deployment fee.

The new version 10 is fully Unicode enabled, has a much improved integration with the Delphi IDE (with enhanced properties and component editors), it is even faster, has extended transaction support, and much more. You can find a PDF with major new features and a lot of documentation on the Release 10 information page. You can find also a short introduction by Cary Jensen, who updating his ADS book (with the help of his wife Loy) for this version.

Given I've used ADS for several small projects, I plan installing and playing with it... also because I'm supposed to give a joint session on ADS 10 next Thursday (at the Italian Delphi Day event).

Disclaimer: I resell ADS in Italy, some of my events are sponsored by them... but only because I think the product has technical merit. Like Delphi, ADS is a somewhat hidden technology gem.

Could you give more information in the ADS database
engine and especially how it compares to Firebird?
Currently we use Firebird with most our small scale
applications but after reading some information about
it, it seems to be very interesting.

I too have used ADS for many many years and I agree
that it is a "hidden technology gem"!!!

This DBMS is rock-solid in reliability & performance -
I'm very excited about release 10!!

I only wish I saw more about this gem (and others
like it) in discussions (e.g. Stack Overflow) since
there have been many questions posted where ADS would
have been a suitable answer (maybe even the best).

It's too bad that there tech/marketing team don't
take full "advantage" of outlets like these to spread
the word.

That said, in my opinion, I think that the whole
Delphi arena suffers from that very same problem.
That is, we who use it are focused more on the tasks
at hand and have little time to spend sharing our
thoughts. We know Delphi (and ADS etc) are gems...
we've been using them for more than a decade to
deploy world-class software solutions that are at the
core of many successful businesses.

Unlike many other products that have come & gone
during the life of Delphi... Delphi is still going
strong... getting the job done.

Unfortunately, in this day & age with world-wide
instant/constant socail media... the perception is,
if peaople aren't talking about it, it's not "hot" or
worse, it doesn't exist. Delphi is a perfect example
of just how misleading (or flat wrong) this type of
perception can be.

Sorry for the ramble... just had to get this of my
back :)

Delphi rocks!

Rick.

MS SQL Server is also a Sybase derivative. Do we
relaly need another format specific database that
further dilutes Delphi's DB controls?

Advantage Database Server 10 Released

I agree that Advantage database server is a hidden
gem. Ive been using the free local server (embedded)
in a small business app Ive done for the local market.

From the first day I came across the product, I moved
from Paradox (back in the days) and never looked back.
My apps became ten times more stable, and deployment
without BDE was super easy.

However, just like Delphi, its sometimes really hard
to convince others why you are using somethings they
haven't heard of.

People are actually surprised when they hear its a
Sybase product (though recently), and now will be even
more so when they hear its an SAP product!

Anyway, lack of easy to follow guides and plenty of
articles and blogs (updated once in a few months or
so), is to blame.

In Nairobi-Kenya, I know of only one other person who
has tried to use Advantage. Im sure there are many
more, but as the Delphi developer count drops in favor
of C#, so do these.
